Is bread healthy for diabetes?
There is no straightforward answer to this question. There are many types of bread. But letโs be honest: about 90% of all bread is not healthy if you have type 2 diabetes.
Why?
Because most bread contains too many simple carbohydrates. And there is a big difference between simple and complex carbohydrates, which is very important for anyone with diabetes.
Simple carbohydrates are easily absorbed by the body. The body has little difficulty breaking down these carbohydrates into sugar molecules.
These sugars will quickly enter your bloodstream. After consumption, you will quickly experience a rise in blood sugar. As someone with diabetes, this is exactly what you want to avoid.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are harder for the body to absorb. This is a good thing because these carbohydrates are released more slowly into the bloodstream. This helps keep your blood sugar levels more stable.
You can usually recognize these products by their high fiber content. Vegetables and nuts, for example, contain these complex carbohydrates.
This is exactly what you want if you have diabetes. You will need less insulin to process all the sugar molecules, and your body will be less burdened.

Purpose of this article
Many types of bread contain almost only fast-acting carbohydrates. Additionally, there are also types of bread that are promoted as healthy but are not at all. I will show you how to recognize them.
I will also give you four examples of the best bread you can eat as a diabetic. Letโs get started.
The worst bread you can eat
All bread that is white falls under the category of โcompletely avoid.โ Examples include:
- Croissants
- Baguettes
- White bread
- White bake-off rolls
- White buns
- Italian rolls
- White baguettes
- Kaiser rolls
- Hamburger buns
And the list goes on. Itโs almost absurd, but the unhealthiest bread for diabetes still makes up the majority of the bread section in supermarkets.
Why am I so opposed to all white bread types?
First of all, they are rich in fast-acting carbohydrates. They can therefore be a significant cause of type 2 diabetes, especially if combined with sweet toppings and a glass of orange juice. All in all, a complete disaster for your blood sugar levels.
Additionally, this bread is entirely stripped of nutritional value for our bodies. When making white bread, only the endosperm of the wheat grain is used. This is where most of the carbohydrates are found, but the least fiber and other essential nutrients.
Eating a white bun or a syrup waffle: in terms of nutritional value and effect on your blood sugar levels, itโs nearly the same.
Bread deception
Another part of the bread section is filled with unhealthy bread types that are marketed as healthy. Examples include:
- Brown bread
- Multigrain bread
- Sourdough bread
- Spelt bread
- (Extra) dark bread
- Waldkorn bread
And the list goes on. Rustic bread, for example, may sound fancy, but unless it explicitly says โwhole grain,โ itโs just white bread in a tempting disguise. These bread types also fall under the category of โavoid.โ

Don't listen to food manufacturers
Food manufacturers try to make us believe that these breads are healthier for us. However, the truth can be found in the ingredient list.
The first ingredient listed is also the main ingredient of the product. And in all these examples, itโs just wheat flour, the same as in white bread.
In short: rich in fast-acting carbohydrates, low in fiber, and barely any nutritional value.
Whole grain bread is healthier but still not great
Whole grain bread is healthier than all the aforementioned options but still not ideal for diabetes. When making whole grain bread, the entire wheat grain is used instead of just the endosperm. This means it contains more fiber and nutrients than white bread.

Since fiber slows down carbohydrate absorption in the body, whole grain bread is more favorable in that regard.
However, it still contains too few fibers and too many carbohydrates, making it not ideal.
Despite what some health blogs or organizations claim,..
...itโs better to avoid whole grain bread entirely if you have diabetes. The same often applies to sourdough bread, which rarely meets the guidelines for being healthy.
The best bread for diabetes
If white bread, brown bread, and even whole grain bread are all not options, what is? Fortunately, there are healthy bread types. I will give you four examples.
Low-carb bread is the best for diabetes
In the past, you only had Atkins bread...
...but nowadays, most supermarkets have their own low-carb bread (or reduced-carb bread).
You can hardly go wrong with these.
A big advantage is that this bread tastes and feels most similar to โnormalโ bread.

With even more fiber than carbohydrates, many of the low-carb breads you can find online or in your local supermarkt are all good. Additionally, this bread contains more protein than standard bread. Proteins are the building blocks of our bodies and help you feel fuller for longer.
Rye bread
Rye is a healthier grain than wheat for diabetics. This is because rye (bread) contains fewer carbohydrates and more fibers.
This is a good example of a product with complex carbohydrates. You can certainly enjoy a slice of rye bread with the right toppings.
Protein bread
As the name suggests, this bread contains more protein than other bread types. This is because it uses ingredients rich in protein, such as soy and peas.

Tip!
Athletes eat this bread to support muscle building. However, you donโt need to be an athlete to benefit from it. Itโs good for everyone. Another advantage is that itโs very low in carbohydrates but rich in fiber.
You can buy protein bread at the supermarket. Many people find it a bit dry, though. My personal preference is the protein bread from Body & Fit.
Oat bread
As you may know, oats are very healthy for diabetes.
Oats are another excellent example of a grain with complex carbohydrates. Oat bread can be homemade, but itโs also available in supermarkets nowadays.
This bread is also suitable for people with type 2 diabetes.
Be mindful of which bread you buy for diabetes
As youโve noticed, you need to avoid a large part of the bread section. If your health is important to you, the bread selection is limited.
Always pay close attention to labels. What you mainly want to look at is the amount of carbohydrates compared to the amount of fiber.
This applies not just to bread but to all products containing carbohydrates. With the right diet, you can achieve a lot and become healthier.
